A Potted History of Bold Writers

Bold Writers came into existence in 2003 when members of an Adult Education Class in Boldmere, Sutton Coldfield decided they would like to continue to meet up and support each other with their writing endeavours.  They looked for somewhere to be based and found the Sutton Coldfield Methodist Church Hall where they have been meeting once a fortnight ever since.

During the first five years, four A4 ‘black book’ volumes of work were produced, and these were given out to family and friends.

In 2009 the group decided to trial a neater novel format for their latest Anthology entitled ‘There were only two hours left…’  All future Anthologies have adopted this style.

During the year, Bold Writers became a member of the National Association of Writers’ Groups.

In 2010 a Christmas themed entitled ‘The Angel on the Tree’ Anthology was produced.

A decision was made to place the writing group on a more formal footing with the introduction of a Constitution, with serving Officers.

In 2011 the Group decided to use future Anthologies as a platform to raise money for a chosen local charity.

A Walk in the Park’ collection of short stories raised £266 for St Giles Hospice.

This Anthology was commended in the National Association of Writing Group’s (NAWG) 'The Denise Robertson Group Anthology Competition' and also shortlisted by Writing Magazine in their 'Writers’ Circle Anthology Award.'

In 2012 Bold Writers chose to support The Norman Laud Association and with the help of some sponsorship, managed to raise £792 from the sale of their Anthology, ’Journeys’.

In 2013 Bold Writers continued support for the Norman Laud Association - and thanks to generous sponsorship which covered all printing costs, raised over £1,000 from the sale of ‘Colours’  - a collection of stories and poems.

In 2014 Bold Writers’ Anthology 'It Takes All Sorts' celebrated a decade of Bold Writing raising more than £1,000 for the Norman Laud Association.

After taking a sabbatical to work on other projects, at the end of 2018 Bold Writers produced their eleventh Anthology entitled  'A Tale to be Told' .

In 2019 Bold Writers produced 'The Story Box'.  An eclectic mix of stories, prose and poetry and were delighted to be announced as winners of the Denise Robertson Memorial Plate in the National Association of Writers and Groups' annual Anthology Award.

In 2020 Bold Writers, along with everyone else, faced new challenges.  Meeting face to face was nigh on impossible and the group embraced 'Zoom' to continue meeting.  Still keen to produce an Anthology -  'Ballads of Lockdown Days', grew out of the new world we found ourselves in.

In 2023 Bold Writers celebrated a milestone with their latest Anthology - Twenty Years and Still Writing
